He graduated with Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Yale University, USA. His PhD dissertation was entitled ‘Genomic and Pathophysiological Characterization of Human Temporal lobe Epilepsy’. He furthered his training in neurology and psychiatry at Yale University, and obtained board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. After completing a fellowship in Neuropsychiatry, he is one of the very few outside North America who has subspecialty certification in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry (UCNS, USA). He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He worked as an Assistant Professor in Yale University before returning to Singapore. Currently he is an Associate Professor (Tenured) at Duke-NUS Medical School. He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and has 5 patents to his name. He is also a recipient of multiple large competitive research grants from Ministry of Health and ASTAR.
He is Singaporean, fluent in English and Chinese, and conversant in Spanish, and Hokkien.
