Background

Dr Chong graduated from the National University of Singapore with the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1997. He subsequently obtained the Master of Medicine in Orthopaedics (MMed) from the National University of Singapore in 2001. In 2004, Dr Chong was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) of Edinburgh (Orthopaedics). He subsequently underwent subspecialty training in Sports Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Before joining Island Orthopaedic Consultants, Dr Chong practised in Changi General Hospital as Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, and the Director of Orthopaedic Sports Service, caring for patients with sports injuries.

Dr Chong is an active member of the Orthopaedics Specialist Training Committee that oversees the training of all Orthopaedic surgeons in Singapore. He held office in the 2009 Executive Committee of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association, serving as Honorary Secretary. In addition, Dr Chong served as Clinical Lecturer in Yong Loo Lin Medical School, National University of Singapore. To promote the growth of arthroscopy, he has instructed at numerous workshops on shoulder and knee arthroscopy, both locally and overseas. He is currently an associate member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Dr Chong’s subspecialty interest is in minimally invasive arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee and hip, and the treatment of sports injuries. He is one of the few Orthopaedic surgeons in Singapore trained in the techniques of hip arthroscopy. Common procedures performed by Dr Chong include:

  • Shoulder arthroscopy, including rotator cuff repair, Bankart repair and stabilization, frozen shoulder release
  • Knee arthroscopy, including ACL and PCL reconstruction, MCL repair and reconstruction, postero-lateral (PLC) repair and reconstruction, and multi-ligament knee reconstruction
  • Hip arthroscopy, including femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) decompression, labral repair, and snapping hip release
  • Meniscus surgery, including repair and transplant
  • Cartilage surgery, including resurfacing and transplant
  • Acromio-clavicular joint stabilization and reconstruction
  • Surgery for patellar dislocation and instability
  • Ankle arthroscopy, ankle ligament repair and stabilization
  • Tennis elbow release and tendon repair
  • Sports injuries
  • Fracture care and joint dislocation treatment
