Background

Dr J. K. Lim is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon practicing in Mount Elizabeth Medical Center, Singapore.  His special interests are arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery for disorders of the knee and shoulder joints.  He also specializes in general sports injuries, as well as sporting injuries to the elbow, hip and ankle joints. He is one of only a few orthopaedic surgeons in Singapore who are registered as a Sports Medicine specialist.

Dr Lim is a native of Singapore. He graduated from medical school at Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland in 1994, where he was a Trinity College Foundation Scholar.  Upon his return to Singapore, he served his two-year mandatory Military Service as an Infantry Battalion Medical Officer.  He continues his reservist duties as a Surgical Company Commander in one of the Singapore Armed Forces Combat Surgical Hospitals.  His orthopaedic residency was at the National University Hospital, Singapore.

He completed a one-year fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery at Methodist Sports Medicine Center, Indianapolis, USA in 2005.  During his fellowship he was Team Physician at a local high school, Assistant Team Physician at Indiana State University, and observed sports medical coverage for the city’s professional American football team, the Indianapolis Colts.  His fellowship is accredited by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.  He holds a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of New South Wales, Australia.

Dr Lim is a member of the Singapore Medical Association, the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr Lim was a medical volunteer in humanitarian efforts to assist victims of the South Asia Earthquake in Pakistan in 2005, functioning as Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon of a Singapore Red Cross Medical team.   He has been Team Physician for Anglo-Chinese School (Independant) Singapore, a local high school with a strong tradition in high school rugby, since 2005. He is also Visiting Sports Medicine Consultant to the Singapore Sports School since 2008.

Achievements

Dr Lim won medical school prizes in Biochemistry, Pathology & Microbiology, and Surgery.  He graduated with honors in Surgery and Medicine in 1994. In 2002, Dr Lim won the Young Orthopaedic Investigator Award at the combined meeting of the Singapore and the Asia-Pacific Orthopaedic Associations for his research into the use of mesenchymal stem cells in ACL reconstruction.  He also won the National University Hospital Singapore Young Doctor award that same year.  Dr Lim was a Clinical Tutor in orthopaedic surgery at the National University of Singapore from 2004 to 2008. He has served as surgical training faculty and as an invited speaker for both local and overseas orthopaedic surgery courses and meetings.

Dr Lim’s research has focused on sports injuries, knee and shoulder problems. In addition to local scientific meetings, his research has been presented at the meetings of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Asian Shoulder Association and the World Spine Association. He has been a guest editor of the Annals of the Academy of Medicine Singapore.  He is a Principal Reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.
