What is cardiology and what are cardiovascular diseases?

Cardiology involves the diagnosis and treatment of patients with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. These structures are known as the cardiovascular system. Cardiologists are the medical specialists who diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases of the cardiovascular system. They commonly treat conditions such as stroke, heart failure, and heart attacks.

Many of the diseases our specialists treat are actually long-term in nature and largely preventable. For example, clots in the blood vessels surrounding the heart can lead to a heart attack if untreated. Early prevention of these clots can stop heart attacks from occurring. Cardiologists focus much of their efforts on early diagnosis, reversing or limiting disease progression, forming a close partnership with their patients along the treatment journey.

When do you need to see a cardiologist?

Do you experience any of the following symptoms on a regular basis?

  • Pain in the chest area, or below the breastbone
  • Frequent dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • High blood pressure
  • Hyperlipidaemia (abnormal levels of lipids in your blood)
  • Heart murmurs (your doctor will hear an unusual whooshing through the stethoscope)

If you do, or if you are worried about someone who does, consider consulting a cardiologist.

As with any initial consultation, your first visit to a cardiologist is an information gathering exercise. Your specialist will ask about you and your family’s health history. Bring copies of recent lab results and prepare any questions you may have for the doctor prior to the visit. By choosing to consult one of our specialists, you are taking the first step towards understanding and treating your symptoms.

Did you know?

Contrary to common belief, the location of your heart is between the lungs, almost in the centre of your chest, and not on the left side.

The human heart beats about 100,000 times a day and about 35 million times a year. Over an average lifetime, it will beat more than 2.5 billion times.
