Services and Procedures

What is otorhinolaryngology and what conditions can it treat?

Otolaryngology, or Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) Surgery, is a medical specialty that deals with disorders and conditions of the ear, nose, throat, and related areas in the neck and head in Singapore. Such conditions treated by otorhinolaryngologists (also known as ENT surgeons) include hearing impairment, ear infections, swallowing and speech issues, and problems with smelling or breathing.

Hearing loss can be from a variety of causes including genetics, aging, head injury or infections, chronic exposure to loud noises, or excessive wax. Potential signs of cancer of the head or neck are changes in the skin, pain, prolonged hoarseness, or a sudden loss of voice.

If you or your loved ones have experienced the following symptoms, you may wish to consult an ENT surgeon:

  • Asthma or allergy problems
  • Congenital ear disorders
  • Difficulty speaking, eating, or swallowing
  • Difficulty with smelling, breathing, or sinuses in the nasal cavity
  • Ear, nose or throat pain
  • Growths or deformities in the neck, head, and face
  • Hair loss
  • Hearing problems
  • Issues with facial movements
  • Nasal congestion, nose bleeds, excess drainage, and sinus pain
  • Problems balancing or dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears

ENT surgeons perform surgeries and procedures to correct common conditions such as tonsil removal, deviated septums, ear ventilation tubes, and cleft palates. Tumors of the head and neck can be removed by ENT surgeons. Many of the conditions of the ears, nose, and throat can be treated with medication.

Salivary, swallowing, and snoring problems require evaluation as does any persistent hoarseness. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that can cause heart problems if left untreated.

You may wish to consult an ENT surgeon if a loved one says that you stop breathing when asleep or if you have excessive daytime sleepiness. Correcting sleep apnea can improve your quality of life.

The thin bone and cartilage wall between our nostrils is called the septum. Nose bleeds occur when the blood vessels of the septum are damaged, and a deviated septum can cause breathing difficulties. Turbinates are structures in the sinus cavities that humidify and warm the air we breathe.
