Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the chest cavity/thoracic cavity (heart and lungs). Complicated surgical procedures include coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (commonly referred to as heart bypass) where blood vessels from other parts of the patient's body are grafted to the aorta to bypass narrowed or blocked coronary arteries and improve the blood supply to the heart muscle. Cardiothoracic surgeons also perform surgical removal of part of the lung in early stages of lung cancer.
