What are dermatology and dermatological conditions?

Dermatology is the field of medicine that diagnoses and treats diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. There are over 3000 different diseases of the skin, requiring specialist attention from a dermatologist.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and protects the internal organs from bacteria and injury. It therefore requires care by a dermatologist for possible disorders that may occur but also for cosmetic reasons, to improve the appearance of the skin.

Dermatologists are also specialised in the prevention of skin diseases and cancers. Skin disorders caused by exposure to the sun, for example, are a common condition that can be monitored and treated by dermatologists.

When do you need to see a dermatologist?

There are a number of reasons why you may choose to consult a dermatologist. These may include, persistent itching or irritation, a rash, or unusual discoloration of the skin that won’t go away. You may notice moles or freckles that have changed in appearance or are causing you discomfort. If you have the slightest doubt, the best option is to visit a dermatologist. Through early diagnosis and treatment, long-term problems can be avoided.

As the skin is the most visible organ of the body, it often reflects your general health. You should also consider consulting a dermatologist if you have symptoms that you have tried to treat with over-the-counter medications or topical creams, without success. A dermatologist can prescribe other more effective treatments and advise you on lifestyle or diet changes which will contribute to your recovery and help maintain the health of your skin in the long term.

If you would like to improve your aesthetic appearance, a dermatologist can inject fillers to reduce wrinkles, use laser therapy to help correct cellulite or stretch marks, and remove warts with cryotherapy.

Skin is made of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The waterproof epidermis regulates water loss and body temperature. The flexible dermis is connective tissue with blood vessels and nerve fibres. The bottommost hypodermis contains areolar and adipose connective tissue and connects the skin to other structures such as muscles.
